REVIEW: ‘The Boy’ (2016)

The BoyTitle: ‘The Boy’
2016, USA/China/Canada
Director: William Brent Bell
Cast: Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans

Don’t bother. ‘The Boy’ is just another unoriginal horror flick that you’ll watch and regret having watched. It’s not worthy of your time, and it’s even less worthy of your money. Trust me, there is nothing in it you haven’t seen already.

This kind of movies are the film equivalent of a re-heated McDonald’s hamburger. Whoever was in charge of writing the script took various elements and tropes from whatever was mildly successful at the box office in the past few years, and mixed them all together into an insipid hot mess. ‘The Boy’ tries to be everything and to please everyone, and ends up being nothing. It’s not scary, it even fails at being just creepy.

I feel sorry for Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans, because I know them to be solid actors, and they can do so much better than this (and they do, on their TV shows ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘The Man in the High Castle’). I guess everyone needs to pay the bills.
