REVIEW: ‘All About Eve’ (1950)

All About EveTitle: ‘All About Eve’
1950, USA
Director: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
Cast: Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm

An aging theatre star welcomes into her circle of friends a seemingly innocent and naive young woman named even. Little by little, Eve shows her true colors, and her ambitious, calculating and manipulative nature.

Nominated for 14 Academy Awards (it won 6 of those awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor), ‘All About Eve’ is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. And rightly so. The script is absolutely fantastic, and it features amazingly strong female characters, beautifully portrayed by a trio of talented actresses. Thanks to her memorable performance in this film, Bette Davis’ legend will live on probably forever. What a truly phenomenal artist. Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm, Thelma Ritter, Marilyn Monroe… The entire female cast is a delight to watch.

This authentic old Hollywood classic about women, fame and love is a must-watch for all cinephiles.

  1. Agreed – this absolutely is a must-watch for cinephiles. Fabulous casting and great script. It was Bette Davis’ comeback movie, and deservedly so.

    1. I love her. Larger than life doesn’t even begin to describe how magnificent Bette Davis was, on and off screen.
